What is True Freedom?
by Fr. Jess Ty | 07/06/2025 | Weekly ReflectionDear Family of God,
What is True Freedom according to our Creator?
Today we are celebrating the year away of the 250th Independence Day of our nation. So, let us talk about worldly freedom and true freedom given by God.
St. Augustine once said: “God created us without us, but He won’t save us without us.”
Two of the greatest gifts that our Creator gave us human being are intellect and free-will. By our human reason we can know and accept that we are not responsible for our own existence and that we need to cooperate to the will of our Creator if we want to live in freedom or be saved from slavery to sin.
The world teaches us that freedom is to do anything you like when you want, where you want it and without restraint. This attitude leads to slavery not freedom, look those who are addicted to food, pleasure, drug or alcohol. They are not fully satisfied, always looking for the next high.
True freedom is first knowing who God is and that He created us with a purpose, to know why we are here, why we exist? God is love and we are created to love. Only when we truly love that we are fulfilled and happy. Love involves sacrifice and service for the one we love. Jesus showed us the way to love. He taught us to love God above all and to love one another as He loves us. The opposite of love is not hate but using others for your own self-satisfaction.
Love is willing the good of the other. It is focus on the Other and others, not self. But the more we “deny ourselves, take up our cross and follow Him,” the more that we are free and joyful. For when we take care the good of others, we are truly taking care our own joy and fulfillment, we are imitating Jesus. “Who even if He is God, He did not deemed equality with God, something to be grasped. Rather He emptied himself and took a form of a slave…He humbled Himself becoming obedient to death, even death on a cross.” (Philippians 2:6-8).
May we all fill our intellect with truth and our will to choose good and beautiful, that is, the will God that we may all experience true freedom as Children of God like Mary our Mother, the freest human being.
Yours in Christ through Mary Immaculate.
