Importance of Humility
by Fr. Jess Ty | 10/26/2025 | Weekly ReflectionDear Family of Christ,
What is humility and why do we need it?
From the Catechism #2559, “Humility is the foundation of Prayer.” Humility brings us further than self-righteousness. The poor in spirit or the humble are close to the Lord, He hears their cry, and He provides for their needs. The practice of the virtue of humility allows us to let go of our illusion of control and to be dependent on God.
The tax collector in our Gospel this weekend, recognizes his sinfulness and in his humble demeanor asks only for forgiveness and to receive mercy from God. “He Beats his breast and prayed, ‘O God, be merciful to me a sinner!’” (Luke 18:13). Jesus hints at the relationship between the virtue of humility and contrition. Humility makes it possible for us to express our sorrow for sins. For “the prayer of the lowly pierces the clouds; it does not rest till it reaches its goal, nor will it withdraw till the Most High responds without delay.” (Sir. 35:17). The humble person went home justiÄ®ed or received blessings from God.
May our Lady of Joy help us all to be humble like her and Jesus who is meek and humble of heart.
Yours in Christ through Mary Immaculate.
