Third Sunday of Advent

Entering into expectation.

I love to think about a Jewish Grandmother or Grandfather – about 2,500 years ago – having their grandchild on their knee and telling them about the uniqueness of their identity. That they are God’s chosen people. That they have been set apart for a unique role to play in the healing and redemption of the world. And, that they are waiting.

They are waiting for the Messiah –the anointed descendant of King David – who would restore God’s Kingdom for the good of the world.

We are now in the season of Advent. Advent means “coming” and refers to the “2 comings of Christ”. That Jesus has come “in history” and one day he will return “in glory.” How do we prepare for his coming in glory? The Catechism says by entering the ancient expectation of his first coming.

“When the Church celebrates the liturgy of Advent each year, she makes present this ancient expectancy of the Messiah, for by sharing in the long preparation for the Savior's first coming, the faithful renew their ardent desire for his second coming (CCC #524).”

So, that brings us back to our Jewish grandparents. They had to wait for 1,000 years before the Messiah had come in the person of Jesus. We are to enter that ancient expectation so as to prepare in this 4-week preparation of Advent as we look forward to his second coming.

I offer three simple ways to experience the Advent season more fully:
Pray more – make more room in your heart for Jesus. Whether that is more scripture, more daily masses, praying the rosary more regularly… Whatever it is, find a plan that is specific, achievable, and stretches you a bit. Advent is also a marvelous time to make a good confession to receive His mercy.

Change your environment – Decorate your house or living situation with Advent decorations. A Christmas Tree, a Jesse tree, an advent wreath, advent calendars, etc. are all simple ways to transform your surroundings to be continually reminded of His return.

Share the Gospel – the good news of Jesus' return is not just for me, but we. As we increase our desire for Him to return, that should necessarily lead to our desire to want to share that with others. What one person is the Lord asking you to invite back or to invest more deeply in so they can grow in holiness and faith?

Jesus is coming back! May we await His return with joyful and expectant hearts.
