Jesus, the Exorcist?

by Fr. John Parks  |  02/04/2024  |  Weekly Reflection

In the first chapter of the Gospel of Mark we encounter Jesus in a Capernaum’ synagogue casting out a demon (what the bible calls an “unclean spirit”) from a man. The demon recognizes Jesus immediately, both who he is, and the power that he has over him. That power is demonstrated when Jesus expels the fallen angel.

When we see Gospel stories like this one, we may be tempted to think that this sort of demonic influence no longer takes place in our modern scientific times. On the other hand, some people can become overly enamored with the devil and demonic activity. They can ascribe too much power to evil influence that can breed a fear and despair in those who believe it. What is the appropriate response to the demonic?

First off, we must realize that it does exist. Jesus is the Son of God, he only speaks truth, and he spoke on several occasions about the devil and the presence of demons. There may be confusion today about the reality and presence of demons, but the bible is clear—the spiritual world is real and not all beings in it are benevolent.

Secondly, we must always stay in a state of grace. That means not committing grave sin and avoiding the occasions or people that may tempt us to it. If we do fall into serious sin, we should run to Jesus in the sacrament of reconciliation to restore what was lost. Staying in the grace of Our Lord is the best protection against evil influence in our life.

Thirdly, we should refrain from any dabbling in the occult. This would include Tarot Cards, seeing fortune tellers, palm readers (or “seers”), and Ouija boards. If we have objects like these we should rid our life of them by destroying them immediately.

Lastly, our main focus should be to love God and neighbor in our daily life. The devil wants us to spend too much time thinking about him in our life. A Catholic who has a simple and profound love for God, seeking to build his kingdom in their everyday encounters is a force for good the devil hates.

Finally, the devil and his minions are created beings with limited power. Jesus –who is God Almighty—has come to destroy the works of the devil and set us free. Focusing on him, his love for us, and staying in his grace is our best protection against the works of the enemy.
