Which brings me to you...

Only long-time readers of this column know that I have commuted 67 miles (round trip) to work at Our Lady of Joy for the last 7+ years. In fact, the day I drove north for my job interview, I almost turned around somewhere near Pinnacle Peak Road. (I only kept driving because I am morally opposed to no-showing an interview.)

I arrived to find a beautiful setting, a holy pastor, and a committed staff. These factors—along with fulfilling work and some of the most amazing parishioners in the world—have kept me here ever since.

I share this to remind you of my semi-outsider status—a status that allows me to remind all of you how blessed you are to be part of this parish family.

It is true that Our Lady of Joy is in the top percentage of beautiful church grounds. Most importantly, the nave of the church is gorgeous. The views of the mountains as you emerge are inspiring. The buildings make our ministries easy to facilitate. And the outdoor spaces are peaceful.

The entire time I’ve been here, the parish has been under the leadership of Fr. Jess Ty. As someone who has worked at five previous parishes, I’m not sure you all realize what a blessing it is to attend a parish with such a pastor. His integrity and endless pursuit of personal holiness inspires anyone who witnesses it. And to top it off, he focuses all of this on helping us—his family—to do the same.

There have been many changes in the staff in the time I’ve been here, but what has been consistent is this group’s commitment to provide life-changing ministries for anyone willing to dive in. Their tireless effort when no one is watching inspires me. Finally, the way this diverse group of Catholics bring their individual gifts and talents to the table is a great example for the Church at large.

Which brings me to you.

Last weekend, we asked you to step up and help Maui—and as always—you responded. And this is no surprise. You are a parish of generosity. You are a parish of volunteers. You are a parish of kindness. You are a parish of faith. And yes, you are a parish of joy.

And we are blessed by God to be a part of it.
