Who is the Holy Trinity?

Dear Family of God,

What is Holy Trinity? Or more precisely, who is the Holy Trinity?

The Catechism teaches that “by sending his Son and the Holy Spirit of love in the fullness of time, God has revealed his innermost secret: God himself is an eternal exchange of love, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, and He has destined us to share in that exchange” (CCC 221).

Jesus is the revelation of the Father; He became Man to show us the Father. He became human like us, so He can show us the Love of the Father. He came so that we can share in the eternal exchange of love of the Father, Son and the Holy Spirit. Christ saves us from sin and selfishness so that we can share in the total self-giving love of the Holy Trinity through our union with Him, and through the Holy Spirit.

We just celebrated the Pentecost last weekend; because it is only through Him that we will begin to understand who God is. It is through the Holy Spirit who has been given to us, “the love of God has been poured out into our hearts.” (Romans 5:5)

Love is the essence of the Holy Trinity. When we love, we know God, and if we are without love, we are without God (Cf. 1John 4:7-8). Love moves us to choose what is good for another person. In a sense, love makes us forget ourselves by allowing us to pour ourselves out for the sake of the ones we love.

Whenever we choose to love and act in love, we get a true glimpse of the very life of God. He is pouring Himself out, making a selfless gift of Himself to us not just occasionally but continually, eternally. The only proper response to love is to love in return.

May the Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of God, help us to love God with our whole being and our neighbors as He has loved us.

In Christ through Mary,

Fr. Jess Ty
