Teacher Spotlight...

Karen Powers, Teaching Assistant

Hello! It’s wonderful to be back for my sixth year as an Assistant Teacher at Our Lady of Joy Preschool! I have lived in the Valley since 1969. My husband and I met while attending Ss. Simon and Jude Catholic Elementary School and were married in their Cathedral in 1983. My husband and I have been attending mass at Our Lady of Joy for the last 6 years. I feel very blessed to have the opportunity to work within this faith-based community! We have two grown sons, and one grandson, Dax. In 1989 I started teaching piano and have taught hundreds of students of all ages over the past 20+ years. That experience has brought me an additional roll here at OLJ as the Kindergarten Music Teacher. My education and experience include general studies, accounting, music theory and performance. I am currently on hiatus from the Phoenix Music Teachers Association/National Music Teachers Association where I volunteered for over 7 years with a variety of music programs including Music at the Mall, Fall Festival, and the Arizona Study Program. In addition, I am continuing with my Early Childhood Education coursework, as well as my Catechist Ministry Certificate.

My goal with every student, whether preschooler or music student, is to provide a safe atmosphere where minds can grow and where hearts can open to the love of learning.
