The mission of the Music Ministry at Our Lady of Joy is to encourage the “full, conscious and active participation” of our parish family by uniting with them in sacred song. We are made up of vocalists, instrumentalists and music enthusiasts who desire to serve the Lord and our own community by lending our talents to the celebration of Holy Mass. New members will be welcomed with love and appreciation. Currently, these opportunities are available:
PARISH CHOIR: The Choir sings at the 9:00 Sunday Mass and special liturgies such as the Triduum, and rehearses Wednesday evenings from 7:00 – 8:30. All ages from high school on up are welcome; no audition is required. We learn music from all styles and time periods, mostly in 4-part harmony. Some of our members are present all year; others sing with us when they are in town for the season.
CHILDREN’S CHOIR:
Our parish has a choir for children in grades 3 – 8. Members learn about music and singing, and serve the Lord by singing for His glory in the Holy Mass. Rehearsals are every Sunday morning from 10:00 – 10:45, which is between the morning Masses. At first, the choir will sing at the 11:00 Mass the first Sunday of each month, although I would like to expand this as the group grows. Attendance at rehearsal every week is expected; standards for behavior and musicianship will be high.
If you have a child in grades 3 – 8 who can sing a recognizable tune, and who would like to be a choir member, please call or send me an e-mail so that I can add him or her to the roster. Space is limited, so get in touch soon to make sure your child has a place. Our first rehearsal is scheduled for Sunday, October 16, at 10:00 in classroom 3 of the Parish Center. CANTORS and PSALMISTS: This ministry involves leaders of song at liturgies other than the 9:00 Sunday Mass. I work with cantors and psalmists in individual sessions throughout the week in order to prepare them to confidently proclaim scripture and help the assembly to sing.
INSTRUMENTALISTS: Those who play a musical instrument are encouraged to add beauty to our liturgies by playing at Mass. I will write parts for your instrument appropriate to your ability level, and will help you prepare, if you wish. You can choose the liturgy that is most convenient for your schedule.
