Live Lives Pleasing to God

I can’t stop talking about goals in January. I think it is part of my American DNA. I’ve rattled off several of them recently. Most of them are good and worthy of our efforts.

Our bodies are important (as we Catholics know our souls will be reunited with them one day) and taking care of them through diet or the elimination of abuse is a great pursuit.

Reading more often helps stimulate and educate the mind. Determining how many books you’d like to read over the year is completely worthwhile.

Getting out of debt or saving more money is a great idea. This goal helps one become a better steward of God’s gifts.

Yet, in Luke 3:22, we hear “You are my beloved son: with you I am well pleased.” This is what our ultimate goal needs to be. We need to make it our life goal to hear those words: “You are my beloved child: with you I am well pleased.” So, how is it done?

New goals with new motivations for the old ones. We get healthy so we can better serve God. We get educated so we can better understand the Faith. We get finances in order so we can be more generous with the gifts God has given us. The list goes on. We get involved in church ministries to build up the family of God. We spend more time in the adoration chapel so we can be drawn nearer to God. We read our Bibles more often so we can soak in the Word of God.

In the end, we do everything we do – to live lives pleasing to God.
