BAPTISM

Sacrament of Baptism (for children 6 years old and younger)

The best gift that parents can give their children is a life in the Church. Through the Sacrament of Baptism, we are freed from Original Sin and are welcomed into the community of the Church which gives us access to the fullness of the means of salvation. Parents, godparents and the parish commuyynity commit themselves to the ongoing faith formation of the children.

Baptism classes are held periodically on Saturday mornings at 9:00 a.m. Pre-registration is required. Parents must have attended a baptism class within the last 2 years in order to have their child baptized.

The Sacrament of Baptism is celebrated once a month at 10 a.m. on the first Saturday of the month. Since space is limited at each baptism, families are encouraged to plan many months in advance and to not have family members make travel arrangements until you are officially scheduled for a date and you are certain all requirements will be met prior to the baptism.

Godparents assist the parents in raising the child in the Catholic faith by being an example in living the faith and by supporting and encouraging the child to live out their faith in all aspects of their life.

For the baptism at least one Catholic godparent is needed but ordinarily there are two – one male and one female. The requirements for a godparent are that they are 16 years old or older, have received all the Sacraments of Initiation (Baptism, First Communion and Confirmation), are an active, practicing Catholic, and have no canonical penalties. They must provide a letter from the parish they are registered at stating they are a Catholic in good standing with the Catholic Church and able to act as a godparent. One godparent may be of a Christian denomination and would be referred to as a Christian witness.
